Overview

The Business Analyst, Data Enablement partners with data stewards across the Bank to translate business data needs into documented requirements, governance artifacts, training, and measurable adoption outcomes, strengthening data stewardship across the bank. The role builds trust with stewards and the senior business leaders they report to, captures what the business needs from its data, helps bring catalog entries for our most critical data to completion, and measures whether the program is being adopted, so the business can make data-driven decisions. This is a business-facing role that supports adoption of the data governance program; it is not a data analyst, BI, or development position.

What You’ll Do

  • Requirements & Rule Intake
    • Serve as a primary point of contact for data stewards by answering questions, clarifying business data needs, and documenting requirements, definitions, and quality thresholds.
    • Translate requirements into candidate data quality rules, glossary terms, and Critical Data Element (CDE) candidates for the program lead (the Data Governance and Quality Manager) and Enterprise Data Team to act on.
    • Track steward requests and questions to resolution while keeping stewards informed of status.
  • Steward Enablement & Training
    • Onboard new data stewards and maintain playbooks, job aids, and regular office hours.
    • Coach stewards so they own definitions, rules, and issues within their domains and succeed in their role.
    • Build trust with stewards by making specific, well-timed requests and explaining how governance supports their work.
    • Prepare for and support conversations with council members (senior business leaders who serve on the data governance council).
    • Develop and deliver training on the data governance program and the steward role, as well as catalog and data quality workflows for data producers and consumers.
  • Adoption & Trust Measurement
    • Track adoption measures such as catalog coverage of CDEs (complete entries, data quality monitors in good standing), steward participation, and issue cycle time.
    • Contribute to the data governance scorecard, the recurring report on adoption measures; targets are set by program leadership.
  • Business Analysis & Data Documentation
    • Document the business processes and data flows behind recurring issues, identify root causes, and present findings and recommendations.
    • Work with stewards to bring the critical data to complete catalog entries: a named owner and authoritative source, a clear definition, process documentation, approved uses, and defined quality thresholds.
    • Provide business requirements and acceptance testing for data governance and quality tooling.
  • Program Cadence Support
    • Prepare council agendas and materials and track actions.
    • Log issues and escalate concerns through the program lead, following the defined escalation path.
  • Compliance Training:  Participate in all required compliance training, including Bank Secrecy Act/anti-money laundering training, as well as internal and external training programs.
  • Other Duties: This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive list of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee.

In plain terms, a person succeeding in this role looks like this:

  • Stewards understand the data governance program, know what is expected of them, and see this role as helpful rather than another demand on their time.
  • Stewards always know where their question or request stands and what happens next.
  • There is steady, visible progress toward complete catalog entries for the critical data.
  • Rules, definitions, and Critical Data Element candidates are clear enough that engineering does not have to come back with basic questions.
  • Concerns are raised with the program lead early, before they reach business leadership.

Requirements For Success

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in business, information systems, data management, finance, operations, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience:
    • 3+ years of experience in business analysis, operations, training, or similar business-facing roles, including producing business requirements, rule specifications, or process documentation.
    • Demonstrated experience designing or delivering training, workshops, or onboarding for business audiences.
    • Stakeholder management experience, including building and maintaining relationships with multiple business partners.
  • Required Skills:
    • Strong workshop facilitation, stakeholder engagement, communication, and presentation skills, including the ability to explain data concepts to technical and non-technical colleagues and partners.
    • Ability to build effective working relationships with data stewards and senior business partners, exercise sound judgment, navigate competing priorities, and explain the business value of data governance.
    • Working familiarity with basic IT and data concepts, such as what a database, table, and field are and how data moves from a source system into reports. No programming, data analyst, or BI development background is required.
    • Ability to identify problems/opportunities, analyze root cause, and present recommendations.
    • Ability to manage demanding deadlines and expectations and re-prioritize.
  • Preferred Skills:
    • Exposure to Data Governance or Data Quality concepts such as issue management, business glossary, metadata, and lineage.
    • Understanding related functions in financial services such as finance, operations, sales, marketing, and risk management.
    • Familiarity with audit or controls environments such as SOX; process knowledge will be provided.
    • Experience with data catalog or data quality tools (we use Coalesce Catalog); exposure to data platforms such as Snowflake or SQL Server is a plus.
    • Experience with project or work management and ticketing tools such as Wrike, GitHub, or ServiceNow.
    • Curiosity about how AI tools work with well-documented data, and sound habits using it: clear instructions, checking outputs, and protecting confidential data in line with bank policy.
    • Business analysis or data management certification such as CBAP, CCBA, PMI-PBA, or CDMP, or equivalent experience.
